Learning to Win
I play roller derby, as I’ve mentioned before. Last night, my team bouted and won against the Glass City Rollers of Toledo, OH. The bout was tough, competitive, and aggressive (duh, it’s roller derby), but the win, for me, was not satisfying. It wasn’t a smack down for us like our first two bouts of the season where we beat our opponents by more than 100 points. The final...

Tuesday Night Turkeys
I enjoy doing things alone. Not all the time, but sometimes. Going to movies, eating out, going shopping. But woe unto me for trying this craziness at a bar.
Yeah, I said it. Bar. Came home one night, husband was out doing whatever, I wanted a toasted turkey sandwich and a couple of pints of beer on a weeknight. Walked to the place around the corner, brought along a book. It being a weeknight, it...

Sappin' it up
What’s that you say? You wanna see my list of resolutions? Of course you do!

Tuesday Evening Melody: “Plain Gold Ring” by Kimbra
by Chris Heagle, producer
Kimbra’s refreshing cover of Plain Gold Ring is a love letter to Nina Simone and her classic song. Built up from loops of her own voice created live in studio (watch the mic on the left), this mellow groove is instantly infectious. Don’t be fooled though, the her powerful voice takes us along to the...

"Remember, remember..."
Except, nope, I’m not talking about Guy Fawkes Day. I’m talking about this masterpiece of literature:
I’ve always been a reader of fiction. I don’t recall how old I was when I realized that pretend could be profound, but books were—are— the catalyst that facilitated significant and irrevocable change in me. I began reading words at two, reading...

W. W. Norton: Björk →
wwnorton:
Because Iceland is really just one big family, it’s simply annoying to go around asking Icelanders if they’ve met Björk. Of course they’ve met Björk; who hasn’t met Björk? Who, for that matter, didn’t know Björk when she was two? “Yes, I know Björk,” a professor of finance at the University of…
